Allow location access. An open view of the sky helps GPS accuracy.
Location is used only while the tool is running.
How does the online speedometer work?
The speedometer uses your device’s location readings to show speed, distance, and trip statistics. Tap Start speedometer and allow location access, then choose km/h, mph, or m/s.
How accurate is the speed reading?
GPS generally works best outdoors. If the device does not supply a speed, the tool can estimate it from sufficiently clear location changes. Weak or stale readings are marked unavailable instead of being shown as zero.
What happens when I pause?
Pausing stops location updates. Resume continues the trip, excluding time and travel while paused. Reset trip clears the statistics. Keep the page visible while measuring, and never operate the tool while driving.
Does it ask for location every time?
No. Once you allow location for this site, the speedometer starts on its own the next time you open it, and the browser remembers the answer until you clear it. Declining works the same way: it will not keep asking on every reload.
Does it work without a mobile signal?
Yes. GPS is a satellite signal your phone receives directly, so speed still works out of coverage — you only need a connection to load the page in the first place. The first fix can take longer with no network to help it along.
No speed showing? Fix it here
The speedometer needs permission to read your location, and a clear enough GPS signal to measure movement. Find your browser below.
iPhone and iPad — Safari
- Turn on Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services, then set Safari Websites to While Using the App.
- In the same screen, switch on Precise Location. Without it the reading is a rough area, and speed is never shown.
- Reload this page and tap Start speedometer, then Allow.
- Blocked it earlier? Tap aA in the address bar, choose Website Settings, and set Location to Ask or Allow.
- Keep the screen on and the page in front. iOS stops location updates for a page in the background.
Android — Chrome
-
1 Tap the padlock to the left of the web address. -
2 Choose Permissions in the panel that opens. -
3 Switch Location on, then reload this page.
chrome://settings/content/location
Chrome will not open a link to its own settings, so paste this into the address bar.
- Tap the padlock beside the address, then Permissions, and allow Location.
- Check that location is on for the phone itself: Settings › Location, with Google Location Accuracy switched on.
- Reload the page. With permission already given, the speedometer starts by itself.
- If it says the signal is weak, step outside or towards a window — GPS struggles indoors, in tunnels and between tall buildings.
- Battery saver can throttle location updates. Turn it off while you measure a trip.
Windows, macOS and Linux computers
- Computers usually place themselves from nearby Wi-Fi networks rather than GPS, so the position is accurate to tens or hundreds of metres and rarely good enough for a speed reading.
- On macOS, allow your browser under System Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services. On Windows, use Settings › Privacy & security › Location.
- For a real reading, open this page on a phone — the address is the same.
