Allow motion access to measure the tilt of your phone.

What does an inclinometer measure?

An inclinometer measures tilt. Use Side to side for roll or Front to back for pitch. The angle and slope percentage update as you tilt your phone. Keep the selected phone edge aligned with the surface you are checking.

The inclinometer reading 21.8 degrees side to side, with a slope of 40 per cent.
The angle in degrees, with the slope as a percentage below.

How do I set a reference angle?

Enable the inclinometer and allow motion access. Place the phone at your reference position and tap Set zero. The reading then shows the difference from that position. Reset calibration restores the original reference.

Why does the slope percentage disappear?

Slope is the tangent of the measured angle, expressed as a percentage. Near vertical it becomes extremely large, so the tool shows “Vertical.” Beyond 90° it shows “Beyond vertical.” Accuracy depends on your device and how you hold it.

A LITTLE GUIDANCE

Measure the angle.

  1. Enable the inclinometer.

Allow motion access, then hold the phone against the surface you are checking.

  2. Choose an axis.

Side to side measures roll; front to back measures pitch.

  3. Set a reference.

Tap Set zero at your starting position to read the difference from it.

Slope is the tangent of the angle as a percentage, so it grows very large near vertical. Accuracy depends on your device and how you hold it.
